WHAT HAPPENNED

We celebrated the arrival of Spring by river Riva at the Glass Furnace, one of the most important yet underrated art centers in Istanbul. Despite the lack of evidence on how artificial glass was first produced, Roman historian Pliny refers to the Phoenician sailors as the first discoverer of glass. Although glass as an art form is deeply rooted in this geography’s culture, not many artists/artisans pursue it. By picking the Glass Furnace as Wondercats’ 4th location, we wanted to make our contribution to contemporary glass-making, and show our guests how arduous yet enchanting it is to create and give shape to glass. We organized a dinner for 22 people in the heart of the vast atelier, surrounded with glass ovens. We told our guests the stories of glass-making and how Glass Furnace became one of the world’s leading glass schools. Guests also got a chance to experience glass blowing in between courses. The most striking part of the six-course dinner with wine pairings was when we cooked glass stir fried veal steaks as main course, in front of our guests. The steak, which was cooked on top of freshly made, 1200 degree-Celsius glass, received lots of “hot” compliments.
